Getting There
Notre Dame Cathedral sits on the Île de la Cité, within a few minutes of nearly every metro, RER, and bus line that crosses central Paris. Get off at Cité, Saint-Michel, or Hôtel de Ville and you’re steps from the cathedral:
- Metro: Line 4 (Cité or Saint-Michel), Lines 1 and 11 (Hôtel de Ville), Line 10 (Maubert-Mutualité or Cluny-La Sorbonne), Lines 7, 11, and 14 (Châtelet)
- RER: Line B and Line C, Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame station
- Bus: Lines 47, 72, 75, and 87
- Vélib’ bikes: Stations 4001, 4002, and 4003, all within a block of the cathedral
A taxi or rideshare from central Paris usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic and which side of the river you’re starting from.
Parking on the island itself is limited, but there are five paid garages nearby if you’d rather drive:

There’s only one way in: the west portal, the Portal of the Last Judgment, facing the forecourt. It leads straight into the nave.
Attractions around Notre Dame Cathedral
Notre Dame is at the center of the Rive Gauche’s biggest sights. The Louvre is a 15-minute walk north across the Seine, the Panthéon and Luxembourg Gardens are both about 15 minutes south, and the Centre Pompidou is 10 minutes north through the Marais. Most visitors fold at least one of these into the same day.
