The Pantheon is an early example of Neoclassicism, with a Greek-cross plan and a massive portico of Corinthian columns. Its ambitious lines called for a vast building 110 meters long by 84 meters wide, and 83 meters high. The crypt is equally vast.
The Pantheon’s façade is modeled on that of the Pantheon in Rome, surmounted by a small dome that resembles that of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Located in the 5th arrondissement on the top of Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, the Pantheon looks out over all of Paris.
The inscription above the entrance reads AUX GRANDS HOMMES LA PATRIE RECONNAISSANTE (“For great men the grateful Nation“). Among those buried in the Pantheon’s necropolis are Voltaire, Rousseau, Honoré Mirabeau, Marat, Victor Hugo, Émile Zola, Jean Moulin, Marie Curie (the only woman to be so honored), René Descartes, Louis Braille and Soufflot, its architect.
Before entering the Pantheon Paris Crypt, note the striking frescoes depicting scenes from St. Geneviève’s life.

Getting There
The Pantheon sits in the 5th arrondissement on Place du Panthéon, Latin Quarter.
- Metro: Line 10 to Maubert-Mutualité station (5-minute walk) Line 7 to Place Monge station (7-minute walk). Cardinal Lemoine station (Line 10) works too if you don’t mind a slightly longer walk through the Latin Quarter streets.
- RER: Line B to Luxembourg station (10-minute walk through Jardin du Luxembourg). Luxembourg is probably the nicest approach because you walk through the gardens first. Come out of the station, cross through the park, exit at the southeast corner, and the Pantheon dome rises right in front of you.
- Bus: Lines 21, 27, 38, 82, 84, 85, 89 all stop near the Pantheon. Line 21 stops directly at Pantheon stop on Rue Soufflot. You step off the bus facing the monument.
- Vélib’ bike share: Station 5032 sits right at the Pantheon on Rue Valette. Other nearby stations: Soufflot-Panthéon (5031) and Écoles-Carmes (5008).
- Car: Several car parks operate within walking distance:
Soufflot-Panthéon car park (24 Place du Panthéon)
Lagrange-Maubert car park (15 Rue Lagrange)
Sainte-Geneviève car park (23 Rue Clovis)
- On foot: Walking works well if you’re staying in central Paris. From Notre-Dame, it’s 10 minutes on foot. From Jardin du Luxembourg, 8 minutes. From the Sorbonne, 5 minutes.
